Barrier islands are defined as coastal landforms and a type of dune system which are flat or lumpy areas of sand that are formed by wave and tidal action parallel to the mainland coast which is usually in chains that include anything from a few islands to more than a few. WebThere have been three primary scenarios ascribed to the origin of barrier islands: (1) upward shoaling of subtidal sand bars due to wave action, (2) generation of long spits due to littoral drift and then breaching to form inlets, and (3) drowning of coastal ridges.
