I went to St Georges and Mary Erskines (less than 10 years ago), and I would say as far as HS goes (moved in HS) I preferred Mary Erskines as it had more interaction with the boys school so the girls were nicer and less competitive. On the education standard I would say both were about the same.

There are some very good state schools in Linlithgow in West Lothian and North Berwick in East Lothian. South Queensferry High is popular, it's geographically in West Lothian, but technically in Edinburgh City.
